The Riverland is one of Australia's main producers of citrus, stone fruits and wine grapes. To help keep the region (and South Australia) free from fruit fly and Phylloxera, quarantine regulations are enforced.
Visitors coming to Berri via Mildura will be required to stop at the FRUIT FLY INSPECTION POINT at Yamba, SA. You will be asked if you have any fruit, vegetables or plants on board. If you don't hand over your produce serious fines will apply if caught.
The advice to travellers is not to travel with fresh fruit and vegetables across State borders. It is important that tourists are aware that the warning applies equally now moving both into South Australia and out of South Australia.
Travelling into and within South Australia
It is illegal to carry fresh fruit and vegetables across all borders into South Australia, unless they have been certified free of pests and diseases.
South Australian Quarantine roadblocks and honesty bins are strategically placed throughout South Australia. Mobile quarantine roadblocks operate on country roads.
Quarantine Roadblocks
Travellers are required to stop at a quarantine roadblock and declare any fruit, vegetables or plant material. A Plant Health Inspector has the power to search vehicles and seize any prohibited items.
Quarantine roadblocks are located on the:
- Sturt Highway at Yamba between Mildura and Renmark
- Eyre Highway at Ceduna
- Barrier Highway at Oodla Wirra
- Mallee Highway between Murrayville and Pinnaroo
Quarantine road signs and fruit disposal bins
Road signs and disposal bins are located along major transport routes into the zone. Fines up to $20,000 are applicable for failing to comply.
Random roadblocks operate in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
South Australia is the only state in Australia to remain free from Phylloxera - plant lice that destroy grapevines and vineyards. If you've been driving or walking in any soil in an interstate vineyard, please thoroughly clean your car and shoes before entering South Australia. For more information visit the Phylloxera website.
